FOUNDING DIRECTOR

BARBARA BENISH

An artist raised in the U.S., who moved to the Czech Republic in 1993 after completing a year as a Fulbright Scholar in Prague. Benish’s own work has been shown at P.S.1 Museum in New York, U.N.E.S.C.O. Headquarters in Paris, the Venice Biennale in Italy and a survey exhibition at the Pomona Museum of Art at the Claremont Graduate University in California, (her alma mater). Her work is represented in public and private collections around the world including The Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Stadtgeschichtliche Museen in Nürnberg, Germany. Barbara Benish has had over 40 solo exhibitions internationally.

GABRIELA BK

Gabriela is an activist and artist, who studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is currently studying at FAMU (the Film Academy) in Prague, the city of her birth. She is fluent in three languages and working on her Spanish.  She has lectured widely on environmental issues and grass-roots activism, at UC Berkeley, UCSC, Charles University in Prague, based on her experiences with the Lakota Nation at Standing Rock. and most recently in Brussels as the Czech representative for Youth on Climate Change. Her next  exhibition is at NYU. Gabriela moved to ArtMill when she was three months old.

ESTHER WILLA STILWELL

Esther Willa Stilwell is an American born artist and organizer.  Using alternative mediums such as games, using video and installation her artwork explores the relationship between utopia/dystopia, technology/nature, and reality/fantasy. She recently graduated from Pitzer College, with degrees in studio art and organizational studies. Esther has held positions at institutions such as The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Pomona College Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Quito, The LAB, and Hyde Park Art Center. Stilwell has shown her work both nationally and internationally including exhibitions at No Lugar (Quito, EC), Pomona College (CA), Scripps College (CA), and Harvey Mudd College (CA).

PETR PROKOPÍK

Originally from Prague, Petr received Ph.D in Anthropology from Charles University in 2008 with a specialization in 'Anthropology of Sexuality'. He has carried out research in gypsy camps in Eastern Slovakia and participated in numerous projects targeting the gypsy population, immigrants and refugees in the Czech Republic. He has been lecturing Cultural Anthropology at  Charles University in Prague and at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen.  Currently he is running his own travel company Prague4gay and continuing his research in the field of Anthropology of Sexuality collaborating with UCLA.

MARIANA DOČEKALOVÁ

Mariana holds a degree in Education from Charles University in Prague, with an emphasis in Arts Education.  She works as a an author and lector at the Department of Educational Programs of Rudolfinum Gallery in Prague and previously taught art at MUM (Mother's Center), before establishing her own preschool program Kružitko. Her graphics and sculptures have been shown locally.

 

 

ARTMILL BOTANICAL RESEARCH TEAM

 

NATALIA BENISH-KALNÁ

Natalia is a currently an art student at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. She works at ArtMill in the summers, where she spent most of her childhood. Her focus is in anatomy, ecology, and food. 

VERONIKA HREČÍNOVÁ

Born in the nearby town of Sušice, Veronika grew up in a family of arborists, gardeners, and cultural organizers. Her knowledge of local plants, herbs and ancient Celtic traditions is helping our gardens grow and knowledge expand.

ADAM SMĚTAK

In his final year of study at Prague's Film and Movie Academy of Arts, Adam also grew up in the Moravian countryside learning everything about organic plant production. His focus at ArtMill is in creating our seed bank and propagating heirloom varieties of vegetables and trees. Adam is a video artist, with a focus on indigenous cultures.
